General Motors has announced that its Chevrolet Volt hybrid car, due to go into production in 2010, would achieve 230 mpg in city driving. The Volt is powered mainly by its battery within a 40 mile range, and extended by a small internal combustion engine for longer distances, with an overall range of 300 miles. Pretty impressive, you might think.
The Financial Times columnist is, however, sceptical about the prospects for US-built electric cars. The Volt may cost 50% more than the Chinese competition, the US has lost the technological lead, and the US market makes a poor base for gaining critical mass, with cheap gasoline, long commutes and expensive labour.
I'd like to think that the FT is over-pessimistic. To early to write off Detroit, I suspect.
