Crowdsourcing

'Crowdsourcing' is shorthand for the trend of leveraging the mass collaboration enabled by Web 2.0 technologies to achieve business goals. Wikipedia, from which this definition is taken, is the best known example.

An article in Traffic Technology International of Feb/March 2010 discusses potential applications in transport.  One example is Waze, a free peer-to-peer traffic application that collects travel time and traffic information from each of its users via smartphone GPS.  Success will depend on achieiving a critical mass of users.
