Exhibition Road

I took the opportunity of a visit to the Science Museum in South Kengington, London, to walk along the renovated Exhibition Road,  just opened as a 'shared space' for people and vehicles, rather than the standard segregation between pavement (sidewalk) and carriageway. The amount of traffic was moderate, and the scheme seemed to work well as a pleasant urban space.

It was a pity that parked cars were permitted (in recognition of residents' past rights) since these detracted from the sense of place.  In the past, many courtyards of historic buildings have been used as car parks, but as the cars were excluded the space became available for pedestrian use. Somerset House in the Strand is a good example, where an ice rink operates in the winter. Perhaps the parked cars will be excluded from Exhibition Road in the future.
