Blog - February 2010
A report in the Financial Times of 17 February is headlined 'North suffers from the pull south'. It records that the number of sizeable public companies with head-quarters outside London has declined sharply in the past decade, with serious implications for efforts to narrow the gap between the capital and the rest of the country. The report, based on a PwC study, suggests that globalisation is the main driver, with Chief Executives preferring to be in London, and non-executive directors drawn from a pool in that area.
I suppose that the move of company HQs to London is faciliated by improving communications and rail transport. A question for advocates of High Speed Rail is whether faster travel would exacerbate this trend, and whether that would be a good or bad outcome.
