Scoot to school

The Economist reports the increasing use of the light three-wheel scooters to get children to school.  One primary school in London finds one in seven pupils scoot in, with the proportion arriving by car falling from 20% to 16% since 2005.  Other schools in the neighbourhood report scooting rates of over 30%. Children with poor attendance records are being lent scooters and assembled into convoys to trundle to school.

Is this just a passing fad? One reason why it may not be is the pleasure observable in the kids, moving fast and relatively effortlessly. The kind of good feeling adults get on bikes or skis - perhaps tapping into some ancient evolutionary advantage of mobility.
