System Dynamics
I attended a recent meeting of the Transport Economists Group to hear John Swanson, of the transport consultancy Steer Davies Gleave, talk about the application of System Dynamics to transport modelling. System Dynamics has a history which includes the pessimistic ‘Limits to Growth’ report published in 1972. John has taken advantage of modern software to build the Urban Dynamic Model which seems attractive as a means of thinking about the interactions between transport, land use and economic activity. This approach is very different from conventional transport models, in part because it does not suppose that equilibrium is ever reached. It shows considerable promise.
