Travel on horseback

I spent last weekend on horseback, along the bridleways and drover roads of Radnorshire, on the Welsh Borders, travelling over the hills and between the villages.  The pace is slow, mostly in walk, with trotting along the lanes and the occassional canter up the grassy slopes.  It reminded me of how isolated the villages were, before the era of modern transport.  A journey on horseback or on foot that takes a day can be done in half an hour or so by car.  The car allows access and choice of jobs, shopping, schools etc, far greater than was possible in the past, access which is a key component of modern lifestyles.  Yet there are the pleasures of slow travel that we miss as we rush efficiently from place to place.

I ride with FreeRein, a family business that I recommend.
